Marcus Daly's Montana Empires - Presentation by Brenda Wahler In-Person
With business savvy honed in the West’s rowdy mining camps, Marcus Daly rose from poor Irish immigrant to Gilded Age magnate. Through the Anaconda mine in Butte and America’s largest smelter, in a town he also named Anaconda, Daly made a fortune. He used it to build his dream: a Bitterroot Valley ranch and a horse racing empire that stretched from California to New York. However, despite his gregarious and generous facade, he was also a sly manipulator, locked in a battle for political dominance with rival copper king W. A. Clark. In this presentation rooted in her upcoming book, Marcus Daly's Montana Empires: Copper Mining, Race Horses and Politics, Brenda Wahler will peel back the layers of a complex industrialist, focusing on his life from 1882 to 1892.
